At the American Press Institute, we understand the challenges advertising managers from smaller newspapers face every day: escalating competition, constant revenue pressure, budget restraints, ever-changing technology, staffing struggles.

That's the reason for API's once-yearly Advertising Leadership seminar for community markets, an intense, weeklong educational experience which focuses on developing exceptional leadership skills, maximizing market share, finding new revenue, and cultivating a high-performance sales team.

Who Should Attend and Why

This session of the Advertising Leadership seminar is designed specifically for community papers with circulation of 75,000 or less. Typically, members' titles include vice president, advertising director, retail manager, national and major-accounts manager, classified manager, senior sales executive and marketing manager.

Attendees will gain:
· The ability to analyze their markets, measure advertising sales potential and design effective strategies for maximizing revenue.
· Communication and management skills to inspire top performance from their staffs.
· A thorough understanding of their competition - print and electronic - and strategies for seizing market share.
· The confidence to lead their organizations forward in today's multi-media marketplace.

In addition to lively conference room discussions with media experts on vital issues, members will meet with small groups of their peers to share revenue idea and discuss their own management and operational challenges. They will participate in API's proprietary, daylong advertising management simulation, and visit the Freedom Forum for an inspiring and interactive discussion on the First Amendment.

Plus, there will be opportunities to explore the rich historical and culture offerings of the D.C. area - including reserved seats for a performance of the renowned Marine Corps Band at the Iwo Jima Memorial.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

According to forecaster Robert Coen of Universal McCann, newspapers are projected to see a 6.5 percent increase in advertising revenues in 2005. However, Coen also predicts Internet advertising revenues will grow at 20 percent, cable at 14 percent, and syndicated TV at 13 percent, presenting a challenge to the print media to develop creative solutions to protect its market share. ROI: Grow your share.
